Department of English

The Department of English at Christ College sets off its odyssey through language and literature in 2014, the same year in which the college was founded. Since then our academics are constantly pursuing innovative approaches to enhance the language learners with self confidence, creativity, linguistic skills, critical thinking, values, problem solving skills, research skills and communicative skills.

The team of dedicated and efficient faculty members led by Ms. Soorya Nayana S. S., the Head of the Department, relentlessly work to accomplish the academic and career-related goals. The department offers two undergraduate programmes–Career Related First Degree Programme in BA English and Communicative English; and BA English Language and Literature and; postgraduate programme in MA English Language and Literature. These programmes help the students in sensitizing, appreciating and enhancing the level of literary and aesthetic experience which subsequently motivate them to explore language and literature. Various extension activities including lecture series, field trips, screening of films, theatrical performances, NSS activities, quiz competitions, seminars, and other literary activities are organised to enhance the holistic development of the pupils. Workshops and Language Labhelps to strengthen students’ pronunciation and communicative skills. Internship programmes are effectuated to enable the students develop personally and professionally. The department also supports the students to strengthen the academics and to attain success in competitive exams.

The three year undergraduate programmes: BA English Language and Literature, and BA English and Communicative English, deals with specific areas of literature, language and journalism. These Career Related First Degree Programmes also foster the creative writing, critical thinking, linguistic skills, personality development, soft skills, and the problem solving and reasoning skills of the pupils. These courses encompass lucrative career options for the students exclusively in writing, journalism, blogging, teaching, advertising, media, scriptwriting, content writing, translation, reporting, and in governmental and non-governmental agencies. Apart from strengthening linguistic capabilities, these programmes also instigate the socio-cultural and intellectual values of the students and enable them to pursue better employment opportunities.

Courses Offered

MA English Language and Literature, the two year postgraduate programme, deals with periods of English literature, genres of literature, history and structure of language, discourse analysis, history and theory of rhetoric, applied linguistics, stylistics, functional grammar, pragmatics, semantics, contemporary world literatures, modern critical theories and study of classics. The programme aims to allow the students to explore the interconnections between language and literature and also to scrutinize current developments in literary fields. This programme also enhances the students to explore better and secure job opportunities in teaching, academic writing, translation, government departments, copy editing/proof reading, journalism, media, lexicography etc. Apart from pursuing career in academics, the students acquire research skills through dissertation process which in turn helps them to analyze language and literature.

My entire school life was outside Kerala and was very excited yet doubtful to spend the three years of my undergraduation in Kerala. But, the warmth, efficiency and dedication of the teachers and other faculty of Christ College, Vizhinjam , amazed me at all points. The college had strict rules to adhere to but it never felt unnecessary. Moreover, the students and faculty were dedicated and fun at the same time. Taking up a career-oriented course has, in the long run, helped me amass knowledge in multifarious subjects, ranging from advertising to business writing. Christ College also encourages its students to take part in extracurricular activities, offering students an opportunity to compete in district and state-level competitions. Christ College is the perfect choice for the academically driven student who aspires to excel in all spheres.

I remember the first day I walked into Christ College for my admission procedures. We were just the second batch at Christ back in 2015. Though I always had dreams of going into a huge college with a pretty campus, Something inside me told me that I am going to have my best days here in this small building. And yes, I indeed had my best three years at Christ. I learnt, I grew, I changed, I improved. I am sure we had a great faculty who stood by their students, understood them and guided them on the right path, supporting their talents and skills. Even after all these years our teachers are there for us in time of need just like a dear friend. The best part is always the amazing friends I made there down the three years. My college played a huge role in making me who I am today. I am always thankful for the opportunities it opened up for me to find out who I am and to explore and experience new things in life.

Pursuing my undergrad at Christ College was one of the best choices I ever made in my learning curve. From day one, my experience at the institution was gratifying. The focus on academics as well as co-curriculars has helped in my holistic development. The teaching faculty gave me immense support and encouragement in giving my best shot possible. Beyond being just an institution of curricular learning, it was also a place of discovering myself, my capabilities, and my skills. The moral and ethical values that were inculcated in me has undoubtedly moulded me into a better human being. The three years I spent at Christ College were indeed some of the most momentous years of my life. Thank you Christ College for the wonderful experience and a lifetime of memories!

Christ College has been a great contributor to the development of my personality. I could identify my leadership skills, improve my time management and team skills and could advance these skills to perfection. The professors are the soul and spirit of our college. Their readiness to help is commentable and it has helped me to achieve my goals.

Fortunately, it was indeed my privilege to be a student of the second batch of B.A English and Communicative English course at Christ College, Vizhinjam for a span of three years. The college offered an excellent learning environment with ample opportunities, be it academic or non-academic activities. I also appreciate the entire faculty members of the English Department for their commitment and dedication towards the academic progress of the students.
